This is the story of the first Mrs Rochester. Solitary, sensitive, Antoinette Crosby is at once beguiled and repelled by the lush Jamaican landscape in which she grew up. Haunted by her brother's death and the madness of her mother, she is trapped in a marriage with a man who cannot return her love and who wants to take her away from all she knows to live in the strange coldness of England.
